Method and Device for Determining the Detection Range of a Vehicle Sensor
Abstract
A method and device for determining the detection range of a sensor mounted on a motor vehicle that scans the vehicle’s surroundings. The method detects a predetermined object (e.g., another vehicle or pedestrian), determines its distance relative to the vehicle at the moment of first detection, and confirms the detection over N consecutive sensor cycles to filter out false positives. Ego-motion compensation is applied to obtain the object’s range at the time of first detection corrected for vehicle travel during confirmation. The resulting detection range is computed per object class and can be extrapolated to other object classes via a cross-class model. A weighted filter smooths successive range estimates. The detection range can further be decomposed across horizontal zones of the sensor’s field of view.
